Two steps forward, one step back...

Lauren had 5 episodes of apnea/bradycardia last night, so they are starting her on caffeine which will help her so she is not so tired she forgets to breath. She is up to 30 cc's (or 1 oz) of mom's milk every 3 hours, so they have disconnected the IV nutrition. The past two diapers Lauren has had blood in her poop. An x-ray of her tummy ruled out any serious complications - they think she has a small fissure in her bum from the suppositories she has been getting to help her poop. We also got the results of her brain ultrasound today. She had a small brain bleed during her first few days of life, but nothing that would be significant enough to impact her long-term cognitive or neurological development. Lauren has also been struggling to stay warm, so unfortunately we haven't been able to hold her for the past two days. She is back up to 3 lbs 10.7 oz, which is just about her birth weight.

Madeline's heart murmur was back this morning, so they may start treatment on her PDA today. They are going to try restricting her fluids because sometimes decreasing the blood volume helps the PDA close. If that doesn't work, she'll start taking medication to help it close. They started trying to give her 3 cc's of mom's milk, but unfortunately she hasn't tolerated the feedings. Before each feeding they check the babies' stomachs, and the same 3 cc's from the last feeding has still been sitting there. The doctor thinks this may be related to her PDA as sometimes this causes decreased blood flow to the stomach and intestines. If it is not the PDA, her GI track may just need a little more time to develop before she can start on her feedings. One a positive note - Madeline has a great sucking reflex! She loves to suck away on her pacifier.

We appreciate all your thoughts and prayers!

Hang in there. I know it is so hard! The girls are in good hands and it just takes time for these little bodies to develop. One day you will be able to look back on this trial and you will be amazed with the girls progress...I was told Parker would have problems with neurological and cognitive development on more than one occasion. We are praying for your family.

Hey there. We are thinking of you constantly. Peyton was born at 35 weeks so not as early as your girls, but she also had bloody stools and it ended up being a milk allergy she was getting from my milk... maybe not the same thing, but maybe something to check out. She eventually outgrew it. Her stomach just wasn't quite developed enough to handle it. I look forward to more updates and we are praying for you.

hang in there friend! i cannot imagine what it must be like to be going through all you are with two little ones at home-- you and your husband are truly amazing people! i know what it is like to feel discouraged when they seem to back-step, but a good friend told me to remember that they aren't supposed to be here yet, so it WILL take time--their time. it's hard for us parents to be patient though, isn't it? your girls are adorable... we are thinking of your family:)
