Madeline and Lauren continued to improve today. Madeline was moved off the High Frequency Oscillatory Ventilator (720 tiny puffs of air per minute) to a standard ventilator (20 breaths per minute). Madeline has a large Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), which is an opening in her circulatory system just outside her heart that is causing some of her bloodflow to bypass her lungs and simply be recirculated. This is causing her heart to work harder than it needs to and is impacting her lung function. Generally PDAs resolve themselves, but because hers is so large the neonatologist is evaluating her to determine whether treatment is needed. The first level of treatment would be one of two drugs that help shrink the PDA, and if that does not work, there is a small chance she would need a minor surgery to close it. Lauren was moved into an isolette today and began her first feedings of Mom's colostrum through a feeding tube. She is still being supplemented with intravenous nutrition, but will slowly be weaned off. She has a very cute little cry and is learning how to suck on her pacifier. We appreciate all your thoughts and prayers!

I am so happy that the girls and Melanie are doing so well...it was fun visiting with you guys today. Mark promotes the two drugs for PDA...and has seen many babies do very well on the medication. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers...infact Parker blessed Conner's two babies first in his prayers tonight.
hi! i am raquel's cousin maci. when i saw her post about your cute twins, i just had to come take a peek. we just had twin girls at 27 weeks, so your story hits close to home. both of our girls had to have surgery to resolve their pda's and both did great! it really is amazing how these little ones can are able to fight so hard and heal so quickly. i am sending happy thoughts to you and your family-- good luck with everything!
HOLY COW! I'm so happy to see their cute little pics and to read an update. You guys (especially the babies) are in our prayers. We love you so much!
They are such sweet little dolls! I am so glad that modern medicine is a part of our lives. We are ready to help as needed!
Lots of love,
The Atens
